Today was one of those rough terrible, horrible, no good, very bad days for Lukie. Well maybe not the whole day... But at least a portion of the day. To begin with Luke woke up a bit earlier than usual and when we opened the blinds we were greeted with a gray and dreary rainy day (the fourth in a row). I coerced him to get out of his crib and head downstairs. Once downstairs he spotted his birthday boy balloon from his birthday party and started playing with it while I started working on cooking breakfast. On this balloon is a green clip that has some weight in it so that it weights the balloon down. Suddenly, as I was cooking Luke's oatmeal, he came over and yelled, "Mommy!" I looked over at him and noticed that the green clip was stuck to his hand. He had somehow managed to clip it onto the skin of his hand. As he was whimpering, I unclipped the clip from his hand and said he is OK. I figured it couldn't hurt that bad. To test my theory I clipped the green clip to my hand and boy was I wrong. It actually hurt quite a bit!! OUCH! I told him not to clip it to his hand again. L Poor Lukie!
Later that morning we had to go to the store since we were out of milk. I told Luke we were going to go to the store and he was NOT happy about it. He didn't want to go. He wanted to stay at home and play with his balloon. I told him he could take his balloon with him in the car and luckily that is all it took to convince him. Once at the store I worked on getting him in the grocery cart. It was totally storming out, the wind was blowing (Luke hates the wind!) and it started raining hard. He was getting more miserable by the moment. By the end of the shopping trip he was way past ready to go. We headed to the check out and usually they give him a sticker. Well, of course, going with the theme of the day - they are out of stickers. So no sticker for Luke. He didn't even really complain. But I knew he was disappointed.
We were on the last leg of our trip, after braving the wind and rain again. Luke’s in the car and has his birthday boy balloon in hand and we drive off. About 2 minutes from home, Luke started crying... I turned around to see what was wrong. And when I turned around all I saw was his face all crumpled up and then I noticed something attached to his right cheek... It was that darn green clip from the balloon!! Somehow he managed to clip that to his cheek, near his temple. He started saying, “Mommy off... Mommy off!” and he was crying pretty hard. I could only imagine how bad this was hurting him since I had tried this on my hand earlier in the morning. Since I was on a portion of the road that I can't turn off I tell him “He will be OK. We are almost to our street, just to hold on and to leave the clip alone. Mommy will fix it.” I knew he wouldn't have the ability to unclip it... and I didn't want him to just yank it off either - because I knew that would hurt SO much more!
I kept telling him to hold on... That we are almost there and then his crying gets louder and I turn around and as I turn around I see that he yanking the clip off!!!! Poor baby!! He ended up pulling this clip right off his face and taking some of his precious baby skin off with it!
But the day started looking up when I gave him the sunglasses from the gift bags from his birthday party:
