Today I picked up a toy for Luke at the drugstore. I had no idea how cool of a toy it was until he opened it up. It's a little toy car, that was packaged in an Easter egg. The way it works is you roll the car backwards on the floor until it makes a clicking sound. Then you let the car go and it zooms (and I mean ZOOOOOOMMS- FAST) across the floor. It was quite a buy... It was a $1.99 and I think it's one of my favorite toy cars that we have for him!!
No sooner had we unpackaged the car and did a few test runs that we ran into a problem at the pit stop. It was actually my fault... I had taken the car from Luke and started doing my own test runs (I'm telling you - this is a COOL car!) and at this point I think Luke was playing with a different toy. Anyhow I rolled the car back and let go.... The car went flying across the floor, hit the baseboard underneath the cupboard, ricocheted off the baseboard and went zooming under our stove/oven (which is HUGE and heavy by the way). At this point I actually didn't think it was a big deal that the car had landed there because I thought I'd get the broom and be able to finagle it out of there. When I got the broom and looked under the stove all I could see was a thick cloud of dust bunnies. I don't even want to admit how many, but let's just say enough that I couldn't see the car (SOOOO embarrassing!!!). I went to get the flashlight to see if that would help.... The flashlight did help in locating the car through the bunnies, and what I found was that the car was stuck in some strange cranny, where it would be hard to drag and pull it out using the broom. I tried as best as I could--- and had no luck. While I was doing this, Luke was getting more upset by the moment (which is funny- because he wasn't even playing with it when it went flying under there- I had been the one playing with it). Long story short.. I had no luck getting the car out and wondered what would become of the car... Would it stay there for many years? Would we forget about the poor little car and it would never see the "road" again to drive another day? Was it possible to caddywampus something together so we could get it out? Should I call the builder and ask them to cut the stove out so we could get this $1.99 car (as you can tell there isn't anything I won't do for Luke :) )? Luke was getting more and more sad... So I did the very best thing I could think of.... I put the burden on Bryan and took it off myself :) I told Luke that once Daddy got home he'd get it for us! I promised Luke that Daddy would be able to get it out. And when I said that, I hoped one of two things would happen, either 1. Luke would forget about it once Daddy finally came home or 2. Daddy would be able to figure out how to get it out.
Well, I struck out with #1. As soon as Bryan got home, Luke went running to Bryan and tried to explain the situation. I had to fill in the blanks of what happened and where the car was. But ultimately the torch of burden was passed to Bryan. At that point I had to go with my #2 hope- Would Daddy be able to figure out how to get the car out? Bryan assessed the situation and Luke graciously stepped up to help assess:
Once they both assessed the problem Bryan (and Luke, of course) had the idea to put duct tape on the end of the broom stick. So instead of trying to yang the car out of the awkward space "they" were hoping the car would stick to the duct tape. Drum roll...... IT WORKED!! Go DADDY!!!!!!!!!! All's well! The car is safe and "we" are able to play with it again (but for some reason I'm still more into this toy than Luke is!).
