Try Something New (or something that scares you) Every Day - No Thank You!

I've been watching more and more Oprah (since this is her last season I feel like I can't miss any) and have been trying to take some advice from some of her guests.   Generally I feel like she, or her guests, are pretty spot on....  But I have to tell you I did NOT have a good experience with the advice of, "Try something new, or something that scares you every day."  Let me just tell you, after my experience today, I won't be doing that again. NO THANK YOU!

Today when I woke up I pondered whether or not I should get Luke's haircut.  I went back and forth on it and came up with several reasons why I may not want to:
  1. The two other times Luke has gotten his hair cut has been with Bryan, I've never taken him on my own.
  2. I love his little long blond Hulk hair.
  3. I wasn't quite sure where to take him to get his hair cut.  The one place we had a good experience is 20 or so minutes away - too far for today.
  4. With the problems in Japan and the radiation leaking... I'm a bit paranoid there is radiation in the Seattle air and hesitate to have Luke outside too much (I know... If you don't know me by now-- you'll soon find out I'm a bit anxious and paranoid)
Then I answered my concerns:
Answer to #1:  I asked Bryan if he was OK with me taking him on my own... Bryan said I should because his hair needed to be cut (I put some of the blame on Bryan- of course I do :))

Answer to #2: His hair was definitely getting unruly. He kept scratching his ears and looked like a little doggie, with all the hair that had started covering his eyes and ears.  We also have his birthday party on the 27th and would like to have it a bit cleaned up before that.

Answer to #3: Thought I should go back to the first place we took him since it was only 10 minutes away - give them another chance..

Answer to #4: I know. It is crazy- Everyone is telling me that... But I still am worried about it. And apparently everyone else is too because there is a shortage of Iodine tablets. And if you do find them they are either on backorder or you have to pay somewhere upwards of $200!!

In the end Oprah and whoever her guest was (I think Ricky Martin?) won out. I decided to do something NEWand SCARY:  Take Luke to get his hair cut by myself and to take him to the first place we took him to get his hair - How bad could they mess up his hair??.... Ahhh... How wrong I was...

The whole hair cut experience started off quite nicely actually. We walked in, there was NO line, we had our pick of the hair cut stations.  Luke was smiling, I was smiling, the hair cut guy was smiling.  I asked the hair cut guy if we could pick where Luke sat.... And Luke picked:

Everything was going well. The man even put in a Thomas cartoon for Luke.  He told me Luke is "SOOOO cute." I said "Thanks." We do short little small talk.  Then told the man how I wanted Luke's hair cut.  I've learned my lesson from the other two cuts.  They've, in the past, cut his hair too short, so then his hair really flies up in the air and looks even more Hulk and choppy-like.   So I told the man to keep it longer in front, trim the ears and back.  He picked up a piece of Luke's hair and asks "About this much (and indicates about an 1 inch off! - I told you it was long)?" I corrected him and said less than that and reminded him that I wanted to keep the front longer... But you can take about an inch off the back. He said OK.

Then he began to cut. I was watching Luke and took some pictures:

Then I noticed that the man picked up the front of Luke's hair and take a huge cut out of his hair...  Way more than I wanted him to do and way more than I TOLD him to do.  But at that point there really wasn't much I could do.  He had already started the processand there was no way to get that hair back.  So I had to sit there and watch while my little boy's Hulk locks were cut away. I tried to feign happiness to Luke, and was swearing at myself and questioning, why did I take him here, etc..  Then as I looked over at Luke all of the sudden I can see sadness, or something, in his eyes... He put his arms up and opened and clothed his hands over and over and said, "Hugs!!!"  That's usually what he says when he is upset/sad/scared.  I couldn't understand what had happened. One minute he was totally fine - sitting absolutely still... Not smiling or anything... But just hanging out. Then the next minute he started saying, Hugs and started crying. The only thing I thought could have happened was that the man had been "buzzing" behind his neck with those trimmer boy things (can't think of what they are called) and I thought maybe the sound scared him.

Fortunately the haircut was over at that point nd we were able to leave.  I went to pay him and Luke wouldn't be separated from me... He kept crying and was clinging to my leg. I could not understand what happened. I told him everything was OK, the man gave him a lollipop (which of course I told him was a toy and we sang the lollipop song). :)  We got into our car and then drove to PCC for a quick errand.

Once at PCC, I was putting him in the cart and noticed some blood droplets on the back of his neck!!!!!!!!!!! :(  I looked even more closely and saw a line across the bottom of his hair line that looks like he had been scratched by those hair buzzer/shaving thing!  I was SO irate! I couldn't believe it. That was why he had been crying. I felt so bad.  That hair man had cut him!!  Picture doesn't do justice below to the cut... I took this picture after wiping the blood off and putting hydrogen piroxide.

After I got over the anger of it, of course I went to my paranoid self and started worrying about Tetanus.  Once I realized he was caught up on his Tetanus shots I worried about MRSA. All the while I'm cursing myself for being lazy and going to a place we didn't have a good first experience and also for listening to Oprah and her guest.  I should just stick to who I am... Boring and consistent.  Do the same things, the same way unless you are 1000000%  positive it will turn out fine!

I hope I haven't scarred Luke from getting his hair cut!!!
Long story short.... Drum roll please.....  Here is his new hair cut:

After lunch and a little "natural sweet potato gel" left over on his hands, he actually did his own hair into this little "do":
